Basic calculation

For equipment mass E, payload P and caster count n, nominal mass per caster is (E + P) ÷ n. Use consistent units. A rating expressed as force must be compared on the same basis; mass in kilograms and force in newtons are not interchangeable.

Conservative calculation

Choose an assumed load-bearing caster count based on frame stiffness, floor flatness and geometry. Conservative design mass per caster is total mass ÷ load-bearing count × safety factor. There is no universal safety factor for every machine.

What the formula does not cover

The calculation does not predict impact loading, mounting failure, brake holding, push force or durability. Validate realistic loads, center-of-gravity positions, obstacles, speed and duty cycle on the complete equipment.
